Project Summary

During my time in the Master of Digital Media program, I was required to create an App of my choosing in my User Experience Design class. We were required to conduct industry research and discover our problem statement and solution. We were also required to conduct competitor research and create a competitor map. Next, we were required to conduct User research and create three personas based on our findings. Once our initial research was complete, we moved on to the information architecture, user flow, and concepts. We refined these concepts over time leading to our wireframes, and user testing lab. We were later asked to compile all of our research and work into final designs and a portfolio slide deck to present to the class and special guest judges.

Problem Statement

Peer-to-peer fundraising has raised over $7B for non-profits and personal causes on Facebook and Instagram (“Giving Together”, 2023). However, only 14.7% of participants return to host the same event the following year (Masterson, 2021). How might we reward users for hosting and participating in fundraisers so they host the same event the following year?

Solution

Pain Point: Users feel underappreciated due to a lack of incentives. Solution: A rewards and communication update-based system that highlights the impact supporters create for their selected cause. Features: • Organizations can define specific fundraising goal amounts. • Users can share goals, updates, and badges. • Team members can now challenge, motivate and send updates through the app.

Main Competitors - Blackbaud’s Teamraiser & Engaging Networks: • Great community support • Easy registration process for users to set up their own personal/team event. • Difficult to set up for nonprofits, requiring coding experience, • Confusing user interface • Lack award-based incentives Competitors to Learn From - Qgiv and Raisely: • Focuses heavily on gamification and award-based incentives • Customizable • Easy to set up with • Excellent customer service • Lacks social media integration • No internal communication tool • Thoughtful components • Difficult for organizations to set up and requires coding knowledge.

User Testing

Pre-test questions: • Do you currently support or follow any nonprofits? • Are you currently or have you ever tried creating a fundraising event? • If so, what are/were some challenges you faced? • Have you ever supported a friend or family members fundraising event? Scenario: “You’re a sales manager looking for a team building exercise that supports a great cause. You decide to create a new team fundraiser to generate excitement and a competitive team spirit with in the office. Show me how you would go about completing these goals in the app.” Post Task Questions: • What are your initial thoughts about the experience? • On a scale of 1-5, how easy was it to complete the task? • On a scale of 1-5, how satisfied are you with the experience? • What was your favourite part about the experience/what should be focused on more? • What were some parts you didn't like or would change about the experience? • Would you download and use this app? • How would you describe this app to a friend? • Is there anything else about the design or experience that you would like to share? Main Takeaways: • Users found the app easy to use, with an easy to follow interactive layout. • Users were satisfied with the app and would both download and recommend. • Users recommended to add more more organizations on screen two. • Users liked the leaderboard section on screen along with the competitive theme. • Users found page fives button options a bit confusing and needed additional signifiers. • Users recommended to not display the page stats on screens 9-11 multiple times. • Users recommended to add additional screens that fill in the required fields.
